Periodontal Disease Second ONLY to the Common Cold!
Dental
disease (cavities and gum disease) are the most common disease
affecting people besides the common cold! With the addition of fluoride
to our water and toothpaste, dental decay has almost become a problem
of the past. But, it took the addition of fluoride to win that battle.
Brushing and flossing alone did not work. The same is true with
periodontal disease. Brushing and flossing may not be enough.

Manual toothbrushes often miss plaque between teeth and under gum line.
You’re not alone! 75% of the population has some form of periodontal disease, but the majority do not realize it.
Tooth-brushing cleans the smooth surfaces of the teeth and is an
excellent way to prevent cavities. Gum disease starts in between the
teeth. Regular toothbrushes can’t reach these critical areas and
most people don’t or can’t floss effectively.
Gingivitis is a bacterial infection of the gum that’s reversible.
However, periodontal disease is gum and bone disease. The infection has
spread from the gum into the bone and permanent damage has occurred.
There are several stages of this disease. If detected early it can be
controlled.

Can’t You Just
Clean My Teeth
Periodontal Disease is a serious infection.
Evidence now links gum disease to a variety of health concerns
including heart disease, stroke, diabetes and other degenerative
diseases that are life threatening. It’s not just about teeth anymore!
Periodontal Disease can be a disfiguring disease. Your gums
swell in size and become very red and angry looking. They may bleed
very readily. Your teeth may shift and dark spaces between your teeth
may start showing. The teeth then become loose and may need to be
removed.
Early
detection as with other diseases is the key to successful treatment.
Your dental professional will routinely perform a gum disease screening
exam. This is recommended at twice a year by the American Dental
Association.

The
results of this exam will determine your periodontal status. If you
have periodontal disease your treatment will be personalized for you
base on your level of infection. A routine cleaning is not enough by itself to treat periodontal disease.

Soft Tissue Management® Treatment Program
The treatment (root planing and scaling)
consist of professional in-office care that detoxifies the tooth
surfaces below the gum line and in between the teeth. Then a medicine
will be used to flush out the bacteria that caused this infection.
A Partnership: Your Dental Professional and You
Besides
your daily home care to remove plaque bacteria, your dental
professional will recommend the appropriate interval of maintenance
care. You will probably need to increase your hygiene visits from two
to maybe three or four times per year to maintain the health achieved
through your STM® Treatment Program.

Periodontal Disease Can Be Controlled!
Without
careful on-going monitoring and treatment, periodontal disease can
recur. Your daily care and professional maintenance visits are
commitment to better health.
